Macular degeneration and causes
Macular degeneration is a common phenomenon among many people over the age of 50 nowadays, and in a few cases, less than 50 as well. It often causes blurred or reduced central vision, which you need to see objects clearly and to do simple tasks like reading and driving. The devastating late form of this disease can also cause a complete loss of vision. It is an incurable disease and becomes increasingly common as people age.
It is caused by the degeneration of light-sensing cells in the eyes, particularly in the part of the eye called the retina. The retina absorbs the light and converts them into electrical impulses for our brain to perceive the images. For normal functioning, the retina requires higher support and nutrients from cells that keep the back of the eyes, retinal pigment epithelial cells, healthy. These retinal pigment epithelial cells start to die, even though it does not cause any pain. This causes the eye to lose the support necessary to sustain good sight. It is because of the absence of these light-sensing cells in the eyes, the vision loss occurs, therefore over time, people tend to lose high acuity vision and see only distorted or blurry images, losing the ability to discover or recognize objects or faces
Types of macular degeneration
There are two types of macular degeneration: wet and dry, out of which 90% of people get dry macular degeneration and only 10% are affected by wet macular degeneration.
The dry type of macular degeneration is caused by the thinning of the retinal pigment epithelial cells and usually, the increase of small crystalline deposits called the ‘Drusen’.
The wet type of macular degeneration occurs due to the abnormal growth of the tiny blood vessels behind the Retina lifting the macula out of the position. Wet macular degeneration is incurable. To learn more about macular degeneration, you can check out our other blog post!
